SUMMARY:2024 New Orleans ICEAM Advanced Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Title: Tian Lineage© Shanghan Lun Pulse Diagnosis™ Intensive\nDetails:\nPresenter: Arnaud Versluys\, PhD\, MD (China)\, LAc \nLocation: Audubon Zoo Nature Institute\, 6500 Magazine St\, New Orleans\, LA 70118 \nCEUs: 30 NCCAOM Credits (pending) 30 California PDA (approved) \nFor whom: Diplomates\, and any student who has already taken SHL Pulses \nCourse Description:\nThis advanced seminar builds on the Shanghan Lun Pulse Diagnosis seminar that is part of the Diplomate training. The basic pulse diagnosis seminar provides the student with a selection of relevant instructions on Han dynasty pulse theory\, as well the basic primary and sometimes secondary pulse presentations for a core selection of Shanghan Lun formulas. This advanced seminar subsequently provides a greater depth of theoretical understanding\, along with the FULL list of primary\, secondary and\, if applicable\, tertiary pulses for ALL Shanghan Lun formulas\, including the most obscure and never-discussed prescriptions. \nThe transmission of the pulses will be given in the same order in which Dr. Tian transmitted them to his disciples in 1970\, the last time he ever did so. This allows us to follow along with his train of thought. Furthermore\, the seminar is replete with direct quotes from Dr. Tian on the meaning of the pulses for each formula. It is as if Dr. Tian is talking to us directly! Included in the seminar are Dr. Tian’s pulse-only based modification instructions for each formula. These were not included in the Tian Modification seminar before. \nThe general outline of the course is first an integral line-by-line instruction of the Pulse Differentiation Methods (bianmai fa) chapter of the original Shanghan Lun\, followed by Dr. Tian’s specific pulse theory\, including the pulse poems recorded in the Zeng family notebooks. Lastly\, every pulse for every Shanghan Lun formula will be instructed. \nThe seminar is open to Diplomates and any student who has successfully completed the Shanghan Lun pulse diagnosis seminar. Diplomates can sign up for the seminar online. For students who have not yet graduated but are eligible to attend\, please email aversluys@iceam.org to register manually. \nThis is the most in-depth and most complete Tian Lineage Shanghan Lun pulse diagnosis seminar\, offered ever. There is nothing to be learned beyond this. The seminar has been many years in development\, and it is finally being delivered live. It will not be made available as a recording. The Shanghan Lun Pulse Advanced is the first part and will be followed by the Jingui Pulse Advanced in the coming years. The seminar is being offered in the US first and we welcome everybody to attend. In case you cannot make it to New Orleans\, we also intend to offer it live in Australia and Europe in the coming years. \nRegistration Officially Closed

SUMMARY:New Orleans - Tian-Lineage Shanghan Lun Pulse Diagnosis
DESCRIPTION:The Treatise on Cold Damage shanghan lun is the oldest surviving clinical handbook in the history of Chinese medicine. Written by Eastern Han dynasty (circa 200 CE) imperial envoy Zhang Zhongjing\, it is an integral part of his collective writings once labeled the Treatise on Cold Damage and Complex Diseases shanghan zabing lun. But the contents of the Shanghan Lun as we know it in current day is far from complete. The present versions studied in Chinese medical schools as well as in the West\, do not include the original first three chapters of Rules for Pulse Differentiation bianmai fa\, Rules on Pulse Assessment pingmai fa and Cold Damage Outline shanghan li. Regardless whatever motivation was behind the historical deletions of these passages\, of the aforementioned chapters\, the chapters on pulse instructions are crucial for anyone desiring to fully grasp Zhang Zhongjing’s clinical instructions. Especially since the pulse patterns maizheng form the core diagnostic parameters in the establishment of the formula patterns fangzheng by which the canonical clinician categorizes disease and therapy. \nNote regarding the Shanghan Lun and Jingui Yaolue Pulse Seminars: due to the proprietary and complex nature of these seminars\, they cannot be registered for individually and can only be taken as part of the total sequence. The pulse seminars are open for individual registration only to Diplomates of Canonical Chinese Medicine already certified by our institute who wish to retake the seminar.

SUMMARY:The Treatment of Dermatological Conditions with the Shang Han Za Bing Lun - Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Friday May 27th 2022 – Sunday May 29th 2022\n1pm – 5:30pm New Orleans Time (CST)\nThis lecture is focused on the application of the systematic approach outlined in the Shang Han Lun to the treatment of dermatological conditions. \nSo often\, the treatment of skin conditions is approached in a way that is a departure from the body of Chinese medical theory and clinical application\, with standalone diagnosis and formulas\, this lecture will demonstrate that it doesn’t need to be so. This lecture focuses on treating skin conditions from the truly holistic perspective outlined in the classics\, as an extension of the treatment of the underlying pathology that is occurring in the individual. \nThis lecture will explore how to apply the systematic diagnostic approach and the modular formula system of the Shang Han Lun to multiple skin conditions\, including abscesses\, psoriasis\, eczema\, acne\, rosacea\, urticaria\, herpes\, vitiligo and more. \nPresented by Laurie Ayres \nPrice: USD $650\nEarly bird price (before May 6th): USD $550 \nFormat: Live attendance webinar. Enrollment is open to all! If you are unable to attend 1 of the 3 days you can receive that one day as a recording only.

SUMMARY:New Orleans ICEAM Wuyun Liuqi Advanced Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Due to continued travel restrictions imposed on Australians traveling to the US\, we are yet again forced to postpone the Wuyun Liuqi seminar with Tyler Rowe and Arnaud Versluys. The new dates are moved to April 2-6\, 2022\, right before the 2022 French Quarter Fest (and coinciding with Arnaud’s birthday). If you wish to stay registered\, you do not need to do anything. If you wish to cancel your attendance and process your refund\, please email Arnaud at aversluys@iceam.org.\nInstitute of Classics in East Asian Medicine®\nApplication of the Shanghan Lun Formulas\nAlong the Five Movements and Six Qi System of the Neijing\nApril 2 – 6\, 2022\nAudubon Nature Institute\,\n6500 Magazine St\nNew Orleans\, LA 70118 \nPresented by:\nTyler Rowe\, BAc\, BChinMed\, LAc\, DCCM\nDr. Arnaud Versluys PhD\, MD (China)\, LAc\n \n‘Five Movements and Six Qi’ wuyun liuqi 五運六氣is the common name of a theoretical system that documents patterns in meteorological changes observed during the sixty year Chinese calendar\, and how these changes affect human beings subject to these influences. The system also describes basic guidelines for the herbal medicine treatment of the conditions caused by these six influences. \nThe theory was documented in chapters 66-71 and 74 of the Suwen. These seven chapters\, which make up approximately one third of the entire text\, originally existed as a separate work titled the Yinyang Dalun 陰陽大論 or Great Treatise on Yin and Yang which was referenced in Zhang Zhongjing’s preface to the Shanghan Lun. The chapters were rediscovered after being lost between Han and Tang dynasties and added back into the corpus of the Neijing by Wang Bing in his 762 CE edition. \nThe Shanghan Lun is the first clinical handbook explaining the treatment of this kind of disorders caused by external invasion. The disease manifestations\, as well as their transmutation and progression with time\, are described in great detail in the Shanghan Lun\, as is their treatment with the canonical herbal formulas. \nThe Yun Qi system is unique as the grandfather of all time-based\, also referred to as chrono-biological\, methods in Chinese medicine. It applies the sixty year lunisolar calendar to calculate and create a forecast model of the prevailing meteorological conditions of each year\, from which medical insights can be gained. \nThe Chinese calendar is based on millennia of astronomical observations and whilst it is often applied to attempt Fate Calculation\, the Yun Qi is not an astrological or divinatory technique. It is a time-based medical theory that provides the clinician with verifiable data that translates into practical clinical insight and solutions. For more than a thousand years\, since its peak of popularity in the Song Dynasty\, the system has influenced prognosis\, diagnosis\, pathology\, pathophysiology\, epidemiology and herbal treatment in Chinese Medicine. \nThe ‘Five Movements’ correlate to the Five Elements\, or Five Phases\, and form the overall underlying weather pattern of a given year. They are determined by the ten Heavenly Stems tiangan 天干. The ‘Six Qi’ are often referred to as the Six Pernicious Influences and correspond with the system of Six Conformations liujing 六經. The calculation of their appearance during different times of the year is done using the Twelve Earthly Branches dizhi 地支. This makes it possible to forecast unseasonable and potentially extreme weather visiting the regular seasons. As such\, these ever-changing qi are commonly referred to as the ‘Guest’ weather\, in relation to the more stable and regular ‘Host’ weather of every season. When this information is correctly analysed\, the Neijing provides a therapeutic action plan for the prescription of herbal formulas with a set palate of flavors for each scenario. \nThis seminar will not only teach us the already calculated weather patterns and their possible pathologies for the next sixty years\, it will also correlate the flavor palates to Zhang Zhongjing’s formulas. \n  \nThe first part of this seminar will introduce the system in historical context and lay the foundation for calculations through understanding of the following basic doctrines: \n\nYellow River Chart\nLuo River Writing\n8 Trigrams\n10 Stems\n12 Branches\nSexagenary Calendar Cycle\n\n  \nFurther\, it instructs on the key aspects of the Lunisolar Calendar: \n\n24 Seasonal Nodes\n28 Asterisms\n\n  \nThe second part of the seminar will investigate and chart the base climates and primary pathologies correlating with the Five Movements and Six Qi. During this part\, we will also explore interactions and combinations in the charts and the role of local observation (including Northern versus Southern Hemisphere considerations) in modifying the findings\, with reference to pulse diagnosis. \nFinally\, a monograph for each of the sixty years will be presented with a strong emphasis on the conformations affected\, flavour dynamics and formula selection\, mirroring Zhang Zhongjing and our lineage founder Dr Tian Heming’s applications of the system. \nThis seminar is the first ever explanation of the full system on how to read and interpret the movement and qi of each year\, in order to better understand the weather patterns unfolding annually\, allowing you to understand their role in your patients’ pathology and subsequently improve your formula choice\, or modification thereof. \nThe course is co-taught by Arnaud Versluys and Tyler Rowe. Tyler has both a Bachelor of Acupuncture\, and a Bachelor of Chinese Herbal Medicine from the Victoria University of Technology. He is a Diplomate in Canonical Chinese Medicine\, graduated from the former Melbourne branch of ICEAM in 2013. He has years of experience in researching Chinese cosmological studies and traditional geomancy and has purposely developed this training for ICEAM. \nArnaud will teach the Shanghan Lun parts of the seminar\, using instructions from both the regular Shanghan lines\, as well as Chapter Three of the Song version of the Shanghan Lun. Tyler Rowe will instruct of the Neijing theory of the system and the actual monographs. The total course confers 35 credits of continuing education (California pending). This unique seminar is surely not to be missed!! \n  \nRegistration Cost: $2\,335.00 USD\nCancellation policy: \n\nCancel more than 90 days before start of seminar: full refund;\nCancel 45-90 days before start of seminar: 50% refund;\nCancel less than 45 days before start of seminar: no refund.\n\n

SUMMARY:2018 New Orleans Advanced Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Institute of Classics in East Asian Medicine®\nCanonical Chinese Medicine™ Training \nPresented by Dr. Arnaud Versluys \nWe are excited to announce the next installment of our bi-annual\, Diplomate-only\, Advanced Seminar series. \nThis advanced seminar will be held in the same venue as the previous installment\, namely at the New Orleans Audubon Nature Institute at the New Orleans Zoo\, from March 14 to March 18\, 2018. Classes start daily at 9am and end at 5pm. Continuing education credits are pending and will be conferred for NCCAOM\, and California. \nThe seminar will cover 5 days of teaching. The first two days will be devoted to presentation and commentary on case studies by Dr. Tian Heming. Known by everybody in our Lineage\, Dr. Tian\, as the patriarch of our movement\, was a prolific clinician often seeing upwards of 300 patients per day. Not many records of these case studies have been preserved to this day except for the handwritten records the Zeng family took while studying with Dr. Tian. The case studies to be presented will hail from the handwritten records\, translated by Dr. Versluys. This is the first time ever that original Dr. Tian case studies will be presented in seminar form. \nOn days three and four\, Dr. Versluys will present on a selection of chapters from the Jade Envelope in the Golden Cabinet or Jingui Yuhan Jing. This is a classic that displays content from both the Song dynasty Shanghan Lun as well as the Jingui Yaolue\, and is compiled by Wang Shuhe in the Jin dynasty\, based on the scrolls he retrieved. \nScrolls five and six include important chapters on treatment indication and contra-indication not included in the standard Shanghan Lun and Jingui Yaolue. These chapters will elucidate guidelines on when the treatment methods of sweating\, purging\, emitting\, warming\, fire treatment\, moxa\, needling\, and water treatment\, are indicated or contra-indicated. And while in the regular Shanghan Lun\, some clauses indeed address the same subject matter; the scope and structure of these important chapters exceed anything seen elsewhere. \nLastly\, on day five\, Dr. Versluys will present some of Dr. Zeng Rongxiu’s early case studies from the 1970’s. Most of the Dr. Zeng case studies that we know today are produced during his later years of clinical practice\, most notably the late 1990’s to early 2000’s. But the early case studies of the 1970’s are all records of Dr. Zeng’s clinical practice during the time when he was still actively studying with Dr. Tian. As such\, these case studies are sometimes indistinguishable from Tian cases\, and exude a rare freshness less obvious in Dr. Zeng’s later cases. From studying these cases\, we can see not just Dr. Zeng’s style\, but also clearly see Dr. Tian’s undeniable style of clinical practice. Dr. Zeng’s book of case studies published in China mostly documents case studies from his later years and does not carry many of the 1970’s case studies. The case studies will be transcribed from a notebook Dr. Versluys was given after the death of Dr. Zeng. In other words\, Dr. Versluys received these notes only after already already studying for 13 years with Dr. Zeng. This makes this seminar offering extra unique! \nLocation:\nNew Orleans Audubon Nature Institute\n6500 Magazine St\, New Orleans\, LA 70118 \nRoom: Dominion Multi-Purpose Room\nSeminar Capacity: maximum 50 participants \nCEU Credits:\n35 NCCAOM and California credits pending \nPricing:\nEarly bird pricing (must register before December 31st\, 2017): $1815\nRegular Pricing: $2135 \nCancellations and Refunds:\nCancellation before January 15\, 2018: full refund\, minus $150 administrative fee\nCancellation by February 15\, 2018: 50% refund\nCancellation after February 15\, 2018: no refund\, but credit towards future courses\nStudents may miss one day and receive access to video \nIn the unlikely event ICEAM has to cancel the seminar\, a full refund will be made. \nClinical Training:\nThere are clinical training opportunities with Dr. Versluys for out-of-town students\, both before and after the Advanced Seminar. These opportunities are first being offered for overseas students. If they do not fill up\, then the remaining spots will be offered to US-based students. Available clinic days are: \nPortland\, OR:\nTuesday March 6\, Wednesday March 7\, and Wednesday March 21\, 2018. \nNew Orleans\, LA\nMonday March 12\, 2018. \nIf you wish to register\, please email Arnaud Versluys directly at aversluys@iceam.org.\nSame goes for any all other questions you may have regarding this seminar. Please email Arnaud with your queries.

SUMMARY:New Orleans - 2015 Advanced Canonical Chinese Medicine Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The Pathologies and Formulas of the Decoction Classic tangye jing \nNovember 4-7\, 2015\nThe Treatise on Cold Damage and Complex Disorders is a unique clinical handbook. Nothing of its kind was ever before seen in the pre-Han history of Chinese medicine. Its clinical and academic value is unrivalled. But when reading all medical classics preceding the eastern-Han dynasty\, it is hard not to wonder what the blueprint for the formulas in this work was? Many historical physicians have contemplated this question but only Jin-dynasty masters like Huang Fumi and Tao Hongjing formulated an actual answer. The answer at the time being that Zhongjing’s formulas belong to the transmission lineage of the Divine Farmer\, and were a continuation of the formulaic science of western-Han dynasty’s Decoction Classic tangye jing. \nBut for modern man it was hard to confirm this opinion. And it was even harder to actually establish the source of Zhongjing’s formulas. Until the first part of the twentieth century\, when among the medical books found in the Dunhuang caves in Northwest China\, a work by Tao Hongjing was found\, titled Secret Key to the Essential Methods for the Application of Herbs for Viscera and Bowels. In these Secret Keys\, Tao Hongjing records a total of sixty formulas from the Decoction Classic\, among which the major and minor tonification and purgation formulas\, and the major and minor Dawn and Six Constellation decoctions. Upon inspection\, it is not hard to discern their similarities with Zhongjing’s formulas. Thus it became finally possible to confirm that these formulas without any doubt have functioned as blueprints in the design of Zhongjing’s prescriptions. \nThough the seminar will give a detailed overview of the historical situation and importance of the Tangye Jing\, this seminar will still have a stronger clinical emphasis and will mostly instruct on the pathologies indicated for the use of the formulas recorded. The pathology part of the instruction will be a pure Neijing Suwen and Lingshu instruction\, drawing from multiple chapters and passages. The second part of the instruction will elucidate on the architecture of the Tangye Jing formulas\, and their relationship with Zhang Zhongjing’s formulas. Lastly\, the final part of the formula instruction will concern the elaborate modification system presented in the Tangye Jing as a guide for advanced modifications of Zhang Zhongjing’s formulas. \nYour instructor\, Dr. Arnaud Versluys\, will draw upon years of experience with Canonical Formulas\, as well as his doctoral research performed in China on the Tangye Jing. The seminar is only open to ICEAM’s graduated Diplomates of Canonical Chinese Medicine. \n28 NCCAOM CEU’s and California PDA’s pending \n\nCase Studies and Formula Modifications of Dr. Tian Heming田鶴鳴\nNovember 8\, 2015 \nTian Heming\, was born in 1883 in the town of Jianyang 簡陽in Sichuan province\, China. His birth name was Tian Qishang 田啟上\, but he later adopted his older brother’s clinical moniker and started practicing under the studio name Tian Bawei 田八味\, or Eight Ingredient Tian. He practiced medicine professionally in Chengdu nearby the Qingyang Temple in the area known as the Xie Family Pond xiejia chi 謝家池. He died peacefully at his home in Chengdu in 1980\, enjoying the age of 97 years\, during which he practiced medicine for over 70 years. \nHis brother Tian Qitai田啟泰\, moved around the end of Qing dynasty\, near the beginning of the Republic of China\, from Jianyang to Chengdu\, where he was a Confucian scholar-physician. He treated disease exclusively with Shanghan formulas. Tian Heming inherited his skill\, and excelled and improved it\, treating any and all condition with only Zhang Zhongjing formulas. Dr. Tian would see up to 300 patients every day and worked tirelessly through China’s tumult. The Tian family style of Chinese medicine is especially known for its advanced and intricate system of pulse diagnosis for canonical formulas. \nDr. Tian Heming trained many great physicians\, most notably Dr. Zeng Rongxiu曾榮修former honorary director of ICEAM\, and important Tian lineage holder. \nIn 1999\, your instructor\, Dr. Arnaud Versluys\, met his ultimately lifelong teacher\, Dr. Zeng Rongxiu 曾榮修\, under whom he trained in traditional Shanghan Lun discipleship for 13 years. It continues to be Dr. Versluys’ life work to discover and reconstruct the clinical practice and theoretical underpinnings of the Tian family style of Canonical Formulas. Not only did he receive the full transmission of knowledge from his master\, Dr. Zeng Rongxiu\, the main representative of the Tian-Zeng branch of the lineage. But he has also received instructions from the late Dr. Zheng Guanglu鄭廣露; from Wu Tianfu吳天福\, the widower of Dr. Tian’s granddaughter\, and lineage holder Tian Yuxia 田玉俠; and from Dr. Tian’s sole surviving disciple\, Dr. Huang Xuan黃旋. The converging of these four branches within Dr. Versluys have uniquely allowed him to synthesize and reconstruct the clinical style of pulse diagnosis and formula use and have made him into the sole living representative of the Tian system. This seminar is a worldwide first-ever distillation of fragmented knowledge in writings and anecdotes dispersed through the Tian lineage\, gathered and organized for the sake of this instruction and the preservation of the system. \nThe seminar will present a biographical introduction to Dr. Tian and the structure of the lineage\, along with instruction in a number of clinical cases by Dr. Tian. A second part of the seminar will be the instruction on Dr. Tian’s modification system for Zhang Zhongjing formulas\, as well as his use of a select group of non-Zhang Zhongjing formulas. \n7 NCCAOM CEU’s approved and CA PDA’s pending
